Ένα παράδειγμα εικαστικής δράσης με τη συμμετοχή των κατοίκων. Η δράση είναι συνέχεια της έρευνάς μου για τους «ενδιάμεσους» χώρους της πόλης και τις μνημοτεχνικές μεθόδους. Ήθελα να έχει σχέση με τα στοιχεία του παρελθόντος που υπάρχουν σ’ ένα συγκεκριμένο κενό οικόπεδο αλλά και να δημιουργεί νέες δυνατότητες μνήμης/φαντασίας στους κατοίκους και στους συμμετέχοντες. Η αναγκαιότητα και το περιεχόμενο της δράσης δεν καθορίστηκαν εκ των προτέρων αλλά βασίστηκαν στη διαδικασία συγκρότησης μιας ομάδας εργασίας από κατοίκους της γειτονιάς και σ’ ένα πρόγραμμα τακτικών συναντήσεων, διαλόγου και λήψης αποφάσεων. Η συγκρότηση της ομάδας έγινε μετά από διανομή ερωτηματολόγιου στη γειτονιά και με προσωπικές συνεντεύξεις. Η ομάδα σε μια σειρά εβδομαδιαίων επιτόπου συναντήσεων συζήτησε ζητήματα σχετικά με το χαρακτήρα και την προσληψη του χώρου καθώς και ιδέες παραδειγματικών δράσεων. Τυπώθηκε και μοιράστηκε εφημερίδα ενημέρωσης. Μετά από συζητήσεις, οργανώθηκαν και πραγματοποιήθηκαν τέσσερεις δράσεις: ο «πνεύμονας», η «ανασκαφή», το «παζάρι» και η «προβολή». Ο πνεύμονας αποτέλεσε μια συμβολική και μνημονική εικονοποίηση του κενού χώρου σε αναλογία με το ανθρώπινο σώμα και πήρε τη μορφή μιας συλλογικής κατασκευής και περφόρμανς. Η ανασκαφή υπεδείκνυε μια «αρχαιολογία του καθημερινού», με σκοπό την ανακάλυψη αντικειμένων και εργαλείων στο υπέδαφος του χώρου και τη μελέτη των ιστοριών τους. Τα αντικείμενα που βρέθηκαν καταγράφησαν και παρέμειναν στον χώρο της ανασκαφής. Παρέμειναν ακάλυπτα όπως και οι εσωτερικοί τοίχοι της οικίας που προϋπήρχε. Το συνοικιακό παζάρι πήρε τη μορφή ενός οργανωμένου κοινωνικού χώρου ανταλλαγής προσωπικών αντικειμένων, που από το εσωτερικό των γύρω κατοικιών μεταφέρθηκαν «έξω» στον κενό χώρο, σε δημόσια θέα. Η προβολή τόνισε τον χαρακτήρα του κενού χώρου ως δοχείου έτοιμου να δεχθεί και να προβάλει μνημονικές εικόνες που αντιστοιχούσαν σε προσωπικές ιστορίες που πρόσφεραν οι συμμετέχοντες. Οι λευκοί ψηλοί τοίχοι που περιβάλαν τον κενό χώρο αποτέλεσαν σημαντικό μέρος της μνημοτεχνικής διαδικασίας με το να είναι το υπόβαθρο απεικόνισης άλλων κενών χώρων.

An Action Paradigm with the Participation of the Inhabitants. The action is a continuation of my research on the city’s “intermediate” spaces and mnemotechnic methods. I wanted it to be related to elements of the past that exist in a particular empty lot, but also to create new possibilities of memory/imagination for the city’s inhabitants and the action’s participants. The necessity and the content of the action were not predetermined but were based on a process of organizing a working group from among the neighborhood residents as well as a program of regular meetings, discussions and decision making. The group was formed after a questionnaire was distributed around the neighborhood and personal interviews were carried out. In a series of weekly in-situ meetings, the group discussed issues regarding the character and perception of the space as well as ideas for exemplary actions. A newspaper was printed and distributed to keep everyone up to date. Following discussions, four actions were organized and carried out: the “lung,” the “dig,” the “bazaar” and the “screening.” The lung constituted a symbolic and mnemonic depiction of the empty space in proportion to the human body and took on the form of a collective construction and performance. The dig indicated an “archaeology of the everyday,” aiming at the discovery of objects and tools in the subsoil of the space and the study of their stories. The objects found were documented and left at the site of the excavation. They remained uncovered, just like the inner walls of the house that had existed there before. The neighborhood bazaar took on the form of an organized social space for the exchange of personal objects. The objects were taken from the interior of the surrounding houses “out” into the empty space, in public view. The screening underscored the character of the empty space as that of a vessel which is ready to receive and project mnemonic images that corresponded to personal stories offered by the participants. The tall white walls that enclosed the empty space constituted an important part of the mnemonic process by acting as the background for the depiction of other empty spaces.
