The part of the street that interests me is on a sharp incline and consists of a pedestrian way and stairs that lead up to the upper city and the castle and connect these areas to Patras’s main square, Georgiou Square.

Starting out, therefore, at the top of the steps, one is immersed in the city through a clearly visible thoroughfare/axis, its direction straight towards the sea. On either side of the steps there are crowded bars and cafeterias. The space constitutes a main thoroughfare for the citizens of Patras. In recent years, the steps of Gerokostopoulou Street have become a hangout for the city’s youth and have been transformed from a thoroughfare into a meeting place, since they are occupied for many hours by people sitting and standing, from late afternoon until late at night. In a way, the recreation offered in the surrounding bars has shifted to the open-air steps.

It is in this place – recorded in the collective memory as a unified, given place – that I chose to intervene temporarily. I placed a soft limit – a piece of cloth – which zig-zagged through the entire length of the steps, defining new spaces, closing thoroughfares and opening new ones. The cloth enclosed the steps at certain points, creating ‘rooms,’ while it was also slit in places, allowing access from one space to the next. When descending the steps and entering each ‘room’, one was overcome by a feeling of being immersed in the city, since the slits in the cloth gave access to the view. Descending further, one was faced with yet another curtain. The existing public lighting of the steps created a play of shadows on the cloth; this intensified one’s curiosity and anticipation of the series of rooms to be revealed, while also transforming each ‘room’ into a small amphitheater showing a shadow play.

The cloth remained in the space for several hours, with people adapting to the new spatial given. At first it was like a game. In the end, one after the other, the cloth curtains were torn down by the people, revealing the continuity of the space and linking, at least visually, the people who had stayed there late into the night.
